The Art of Being a Boss - Training

Who Should Attend?

The training is meant for new employees (by external or internal recruitment), managers making their first steps in team management. In particular, the course is expected to:

  • Building up ‘boss’ role awareness,
  • Develop the responsibility for employees’ individual results.

The program provides tools for:

  • Efficient interpersonal communication,
  • Motivation and involvement of people in realization of the entrusted tasks,
  • Clear formulation of goals,
  • Precise communication of tasks, orders and expectations,
  • Work monitoring and assessment, enforcement of entrusted tasks, giving constructive reply,
  • Organization of own and team’s work.

Expected Results

During the training, the participants shall be able to expand their knowledge about people management. They shall also get the tools for communication, setting goals, giving commendations and reprimands and conducting meetings with employees.

The training participants shall be able to immediately train their new skills in specially designed games, exercises and simulations.

At the and of the training, each participant shall elaborate his own plan of changes which shall be ready for implementation after return to the work.

After the training, the participants shall be able to:

  • Define their present role in the organization and the most important manager’s tasks,
  • Communicate in such a way that their authority in the team is built up or strengthened,
  • Set out goals and appoint tasks,
  • Adapt their activities to the situation and type of employee,
  • Give commendations, reprimands, conduct corrective conversations,
  • Conduct effective meetings with employees.

    • Role and tasks of the ‘newly-graduated’ manager in the organization or what will my superiors and subordinates expect from me.
    • I and THEY, or how shall I properly find my place between the ‘top’ and ‘bottom’ in respect of my future challenges , in particular, when:
      • I’m in a new team,
      • I shall manage a team when I have been a member of this team until now.
    • A young manager holding a prominent position or how shall I build the authority in the team
      • Awareness of own values and resources (strong points) and reserves (weak points) as a base for thinking about oneself in the categories of boss and building own authority,
      • How and when to communicate own values,
      • Influence of own beliefs and habits on employees’ behavior.
  2. Manager’s expose, i.e., definition and communication of cooperation rules
    • Expose of a young boss – what for?
    • What to communicate during an expose?
    • Course of expose – theory and practice (exercises).
  3. The way to achieve goals:
    • Relation between the values, goals, way of communication thereof and strategy and tactics.
    • Rules of proper definition of goals for the boss himself and for the subordinates, SMART rule.
    • Setting of goals with understanding check.
    • The art of authorization delegation and appointment of proper people to the given tasks.
  4. Psychology of co-operation of people or what shall each young boss know about his subordinates…
    • Types of employees.
    • Styles of management work.
    • Leader’s behavior within the styles of management work.
    • Adaptation of managing activities to situations and type of employees.
    • Rules and methods for ‘modeling’ of required employees’ behavior.
    • If the traditional activities don’t bring any effect or techniques subordinates influencing which are acceptable in the society.
  5. How do good bosses communicate?
    • Task-oriented communication in relation with subordinates.
    • Communication tools:
      • bilateral communication,
      • asking questions,
      • paraphrasing,
      • active listening,
      • assertive communication.
    • Communication situations requiring special attention and ‘care’
      • giving commendations,
      • giving reprimands,
      • corrective conversation.
    • Communication at meetings with employees
      • preparation for meetings,
      • rules for conducting of meetings,
      • managing difficult participants,
      • moderated discussion,
      • utilization of audio and video means,
      • end of the meeting.

Training Structure

2 days training, interactive workshop.

Methodology

The whole training is conducted using participant-activating methods, such as: moderated discussion, meta-plan, scenes, individual exercises, group exercises.
